Built by people who have done this three times before.

Hespera Reach is the fourth place we have built and run ourselves. The first was The Penrose House in Texas. Then Asheville Signature in the North Carolina mountains, and Inkwood Reserve in upstate New York. Each is a different building in a different landscape, and each is run the same way: we own it, we furnish it, we answer the messages, and we are the people you deal with if something goes wrong at eleven at night.

This one began with a piece of land. A hillside four hundred feet above Luray with the Blue Ridge across the whole eastern sky and Massanutten closing the west, and a single track in. We bought the surrounding parcels until the property was twenty-five acres and nothing else could be built in view. Then we put two cabins on it, low and black, so that the buildings would recede and the land would not.

The names

Hesperus is the evening star, the first light in the west after the sun goes down behind Massanutten. A reach is a stretch of open land, or of a river between two bends. Aubade is a song for the morning and faces the sunrise; Nocturne is a piece for the night and faces the sunset. The bedrooms — Hawksbill, The Orchard, Meadow, Kiln, Lantern, Observatory, Cavern, Ember, Fern, Nightjar — are named for the things around them, and each is hand-painted for its name by a muralist we have worked with before.

What we believe about a stay

That a group should never have to share the good things with strangers, so there are two of everything and no other guests. That the inside of a cabin should be the opposite of the outside: warm, saturated, generous, and built for people who intend to stay put. That the best rate should be the direct one. And that the person answering your message should be the person who chose the mattresses.

How we run it

Hosted by Khushi, with a local team in Luray for housekeeping, hot tubs and the things that need a person on site within the hour. We invoice companies, we don't take a commission from retreat leaders, and we answer within a day. The cabins open in October 2026; the calendar is open now for dates from then.
