The valley
The park one way, the town the other, and not much in between.
Five miles east is a national park. Five miles west is breakfast.
Thornton Gap is the closest entrance to Shenandoah National Park and the start of the northern section of Skyline Drive — which means the overlooks, Marys Rock, Stony Man and Hawksbill are all a short drive rather than a day trip.
The other direction is Luray: a patisserie people drive from Washington for, a brewery on Main Street, the Caverns just past town, and vineyards spread across the valley floor. In summer the South Fork of the Shenandoah is close enough to float in the afternoon and be back for the fire.

October
The reason most people come. The ridge turns first, from the top down, and the view from either deck changes every day for three weeks. Skyline Drive is at its busiest and its best; go up early, drive the overlooks between Thornton Gap and Big Meadows, and be back for lunch at the table outside. Apples and cider on the valley farms, and the first fires of the year.
Winter
The quiet season, and the one this property was built for. The saunas and hot tubs do their real work, the games rooms get long evenings, and when it snows the valley is the softest thing you have ever seen from a window. Skyline Drive closes in ice, but the Caverns stay fifty-four degrees, the brewery stays open, and the trails from the valley side are empty. Massanutten Resort, forty minutes across the valley, has skiing and a water park for the days the children need one.
Spring
The waterfalls are fullest from March to May — Whiteoak Canyon, Dark Hollow, Rose River — and the wildflowers on the ridge come in waves from April. The valley greens before the mountain does, so for a few weeks in April you can stand on the lawn in shirtsleeves and look up at bare trees. Vineyards reopen their tasting rooms.
Summer
The river. Tubes, canoes and kayaks on the South Fork, back in time for the grill. Hot afternoons in the saunas are not the idea, but the hot tubs at sunrise and the fire pits after dark are. Luray's Main Street is at its liveliest, the summit trails are cool at four thousand feet, and the play set and bocce court earn their keep.
Whatever the month, the last fifteen minutes of every day are the same: the sun goes down behind Massanutten, the ridge behind you goes pink, and then blue, and then it is dark in a way it never is at home.
Questions people ask
Which Shenandoah National Park entrance is closest?
Thornton Gap, on US-211, about fifteen minutes from the cabins. It is one of four entrances and puts you on Skyline Drive at mile 31, between the northern and central sections.
Do we need a reservation for the park?
No. Shenandoah does not use a timed-entry system. There is an entrance fee per vehicle, good for seven days, and an annual pass if you'll be back.
Is Skyline Drive open in winter?
Usually, but it closes without much notice in snow and ice, sometimes for days. The park posts road status daily. The valley roads stay open, and Luray Caverns is fifty-four degrees whatever the weather.
How far is Luray Caverns?
About fifteen minutes, on the far side of town. It is the largest cavern system in the eastern United States and takes about an hour to walk through.
When is the autumn colour at its best?
Usually the second and third weeks of October on the ridge, a week or so later on the valley floor. Weekends on Skyline Drive are busy then; go up before nine or after three.
Is there anything for children?
The play set and bocce court on the lawn, the river in summer, the caverns in any weather, and the easy park trails. Stony Man is a mile and a half round trip and children do it happily.
Can we float the river?
Yes, from late spring to early autumn. The South Fork of the Shenandoah runs past Luray, and the outfitters rent tubes, canoes and kayaks and shuttle you back.
