Big groups usually mean one crowded house. This is two.

Ten bedrooms across two separate buildings on the same hill. Everyone is together when it matters and separate when it doesn't — which is the difference between a group holiday people enjoy and one they endure.

Both kitchens are full kitchens, each with its own coffee bar. Both cabins have their own hot tub, sauna, fire pit, grill and long outdoor table — and their own games room, with a pool table and arcade cabinets in each. Grandparents can go to bed at nine on one side of the lawn while the pool tournament is still going on the other, and neither party knows about the other.

Every bedroom is a real bedroom with a real bed. The colors change room to room, and the children's rooms are hand-painted murals.

Who takes the whole hill.

Three generations

The most common booking is a family of families — grandparents, their children, and their children's children — for Thanksgiving, a seventieth birthday, or the one week a year everyone can get off. Two cabins solve the problem that one big house never does: the early risers and the late sleepers are under different roofs. The play set is on the lawn between them, in sight of both kitchens.

Friends who have known each other a long time

Couples, or a big mixed group, for a long weekend that is mostly about the table and the fire. There are two game rooms, one in each cabin, so the pool tournament and the film run at the same time and nobody is asked to keep it down.

Teams and retreats

Companies and retreat leaders with a cohort. Two great rooms and two long tables carry the working part of the day, and the rest of the property does the part that a hotel meeting room never can. Those have their own page and so do retreats.

How the bedrooms divide

In each cabin four bedrooms have a king bed and one has two full beds, so there are twelve beds in all. Aubade's two-bed room is a hand-painted forest mural; Nocturne's is a painted cave inspired by Luray Caverns. Families tend to take a cabin each; friend groups tend to sort by who is still up at midnight. Either way, nobody is on a sofa.

Some large cabins near Shenandoah get to their numbers by counting bunk rooms and pull-outs. Here it is ten real bedrooms.

Questions people ask

Is this one house or two?

Two. Aubade and Nocturne are separate five-bedroom cabins on the same twenty-two acres, each with its own kitchen, hot tub, sauna, fire pit and games room. Booked together they give a large group ten bedrooms, two hot tubs, two saunas and two game rooms.

Can we rent just one cabin?

Yes. Each cabin books on its own. When you take one, the other may be occupied by another group, though the decks face opposite ways and the lawn between is wide.

Where does everyone eat together?

Each cabin has a long dining table under its A-frame windows and a long table on its covered deck, so a big group can eat in one sitting at each house or move between them.

How many bathrooms are there?

Seven — four at Aubade and three at Nocturne. Ten bedrooms sharing seven bathrooms across two buildings means nobody is queuing for long at eight in the morning.

Will there be other guests on the property?

Not when you book both cabins. Both houses and the twenty-two acres around them are yours.

What is the minimum stay?

Three nights, four over Christmas. Whole-property bookings for a week or longer are worth a conversation first.

How are the beds arranged?

Twelve beds in ten bedrooms: in each cabin four bedrooms have a king bed and one has two full beds.
